Quilt from the 70’s

This quilt was made by my mother Betty Guinn in the early 70’s. She saw a picture in The Mountain Mist Blue Book of Quilts. I still have a copy of the book. She had never quilted but always made my sister and my clothes. She and my father took a trip to Great Britain and I remember her coming home with bundles of different cotton fabrics. My father made her a template to cut the hexagons and she proceeded to hand piece the quilt, not one but two tops as they had twin beds. When the tops were finished she didn’t know what to do next. My boyfriend, soon to be husband said his mother quilted and he was sure she would quilt them. She lived in Pangman, Saskatchewan, population 250. So the tops and some flat yellow sheets were mailed off to Saskatchewan. As a quilter now I can’t believe we asked someone to hand quilt two quilts. Somehow they arrived back in North Vancouver beautifully quilted and bound. My mother passed away in 2000. I gave one of the quilts to my sister and I treasure mine.

Hand quilted and hand pieced

  1. Your mother's quilt looks even prettier on the bed, Marybeth. Have you ever counted up all the different prints that she used?
