About Us

The TAQ's or Tuesday Afternoon Quilters group has been around for thirty-something years, formerly known as the TNQ's or the Tuesday Night Quilters. Penny Danyliu, Joyce Shimokura, Sue Evans, Adrienne Clark and Betty Duck have been members from the start. It was started by a group of busy Burnaby teachers who wanted to make a "Quilt in a Day", popularized by Eleanor Burns. Being teachers they were busy women and finishing a quilt in a day seemed perfect for them. You can probably guess how that proceeded. Those 8 hour quilts took several years to finish but the group grew and the friendships with it.

Our focus now is making community quilts. We do not donate them to any one cause but have decided to store up our quilts until a worthy cause presents itself. Our first quilts went to the Kelowna Fire victims in September 2023.  From September 2023 to September 2024 we made approximately 30 quilts for donation and have donated two to the Young Parents Program at Burnaby South High School and have committed to supporting The Heron's Nest Program, sponsored by the Vancouver School Board and is a similar program to the now discontinued YPP program in Burnaby.  At present we are considering ongoing support of the Project Linus Program, Ronald McDonald House, Quilts for Survivors and Quilts of Valour as well as reserving some quilts for emergency situations.

Current members of the group are:  Joyce Shimokura, Adrienne Clark, Sue Evans, Penny Danyliu, Betty Duck, Sharon Hope, Colleen Dobbeck, Pauline Hastings, Marybeth Lavender, Leng Yip and Nancy Chan.

Here is a photo of some of the original members with the quilt that inspired the group. On the right is Arlene Clark, who was a former Burnaby teacher and co-owner of Quilters' Haven quilt shop. Arlene was responsible for starting the group.  In the center is Anne Clark an occasional visitor of the group from Victoria and on the left is Betty Duck who is still a member and still quilting a Mile a Minute. ðŸ˜‰
