June 4th Meeting Update

It was an exciting day with our first opportunity to make a donation in person to the quilt recipient.  We were happy to be supporting the YPP program at Burnaby South and will continue in September with the Heron's Nest program in Vancouver now that the YPP program is ending.  See below for a photo and details.

There was an abundance of quilts today, some that we knew were in the works and many new quilts which were surprises.

Marybeth was busy working on the binding on her Trellis quilt, tentatively called her Sea Foam quilt which we all thought was an apt name.  However, Marybeth was not 100% sold on the idea, remembering it as a colour to be avoided by bridesmaids from a past era.  Sorry, there's no photo but we will post one when it's all finished and we see what name turns up on the label.

Marybeth's surprise quilt was already pieced and up on her design wall.  This is another sweet little baby quilt in modern neutral colours of grey with a lavender accent as a thin border.  Fortunately Marybeth has the pattern since I can see us making a few of these.

Joyce had two I Spy quilts, one that was ready for spray basting and one that was completely finished.  We will see the larger one later when it is finished but here is a picture of the play mat quilt which is a disappearing nine patch.

This little quilt was unique in that it was reversible with a map on the back with even more options for play time.

Joyce combined machine quilting and tying on this quilt and a simple turned border which is a good choice for a reversible quilt.

Another surprise from Joyce is this cute pieced quilt featuring a flock of sheep.  This quilt needs a little more quilting and Joyce suggested some free motion stitching to give the sheep's wool some texture.  Not sure if I am up to that but I will give it a try.  Then just a little embroidery to fill in the mouths and it will be done.  So cute!

Colleen arrived with a new finished top and a table runner quilted with the binding partially completed.

I believe Colleen saw a picture of this quilt and worked out the math for the blocks on her own.  The first picture is a close up of the cute prints, which I believe were from Colleen's Downtown Abbey collection.

The second photo is the whole quilt ready for sandwiching and quilting.

Here is Colleen's batik table runner and a close up showing the dragonfly print in the circle appliques and more accurate background colours than the large photo.

The final photo is my finished scrappy brick top made by sewing scraps to strips of an adding machine roll kindly donated by Marybeth.  I guess I shouldn't have donated the whole case I had under my desk to Bases when I retired.  I could have used them all up judging by the number of scraps I have in every nook and cranny of my sewing room.  I enjoyed making this scrap quilt a lot so my next quilt will probably be a scrappy spider web quilt but that is still in the planning stages and I have to get a baby quilt done before I get sidetracked again.

I'll probably quilt it with horizontal wavy lines.

That was it for Show and Tell.  We discussed a plan for our tentative road trip out to the Fraser Valley for a Shop Hop and lunch.  Joyce will contact Bonsor and let us know if this is doable.  The plan right now is to visit Chitter Chatter Fabrics in Abbotsford, carry on to Chilliwack for lunch at The Offy Bistro, followed by visits to Cozy Cottons Quilting and Carola's Quilt Shop and then home.  I've included links if you want to check out the itinerary further.
